In contrast, commonly used white woods like hemlock, aspen, douglas fir, and poplar are porous and prone to retaining moisture, leading to mold and fungi accumulation which can compromise air quality within the sauna. For the exterior, Finnmark Design employs Thermal Plus™ Aspen, treated solely with heat and steam to enhance its durability and hypoallergenic properties, making it a superior alternative to cedar in terms of strength and longevity. This approach is in stark contrast to the industry trend of using lower-quality woods susceptible to damage and contamination, including the often-misrepresented eucalyptus, which despite its high cost, is unsuitable for sauna use due to its tendency to warp and its distinct odor.

Thermal modification is a process that improves wood's stability and durability by heating it to high temperatures, typically between 160 to 240°C. The process can be done in dry or wet conditions, affecting the wood's properties differently. Heating in dry conditions tends to make the wood less absorbent and more stable, while heating in wet conditions mainly affects the wood's inner components, with effects that may not be as lasting after the wood is exposed to water. This technique is beneficial for making wood more suitable for outdoor use or in environments where moisture levels change frequently.
